Geothermal Project in Levi, Kittilä – 36 Geothermal Boreholes
In the summer of 2024, Juvatec Oy completed a large-scale geothermal energy field at the Levi tourist center in Kittilä. The project involved drilling 36 geothermal wells into Lapland’s challenging bedrock, requiring specialized expertise and equipment.
Challenging soil conditions and bedrock structure
The bedrock in Lapland created demanding conditions for the project, as some geothermal wells had to be cased with steel pipes to depths of up to 60 meters. The steel casing extended up to 30 meters into fractured rock, making the drilling particularly challenging. This solution ensured a durable and long-lasting result in the fractured conditions.
A versatile fleet of equipment enabled efficient operations
Two different drilling rigs were used on site to maximize work efficiency. The rig with a longer 6-meter element capacity handled the steel casing, and this length allowed for faster and more durable drilling through the soft soil layer. Simultaneously, the other rig with a shorter element capacity performed rock drilling, ensuring smooth progress of the project.
Durable and environmentally friendly energy choice
This extensive geothermal field provides the buildings at the Levi tourist center with an eco-friendly and cost-effective energy solution that meets the energy demands of the Arctic region in a sustainable way. The success of the Kittilä project demonstrates Juvatec Oy’s ability to execute challenging geothermal projects under demanding conditions.
